Warwick was 181st out of 182 cities ranked in a study, “2018’s Best Places to Get Married,” conducted by research and financial analysis company Wallethub.
The study examined the 150 most populated U.S. cities, plus at least two of each state’s most populous cities, and graded them according to three categories – cost of wedding services; availability of facilities and services; and available activities and attractions.
Within these three categories were 23 relevant metrics with a corresponding weight, which added up to a total possible score of 100 for each city. Warwick, ahead of only Bridgeport, Conn. in its ranking, scored just 16.44 in its cumulative rank score. Providence was the only other Rhode Island city ranked, and it came in at 166th with a total score of 26 points.
Hurting Warwick in the ranking was the fact that it tied for 178th in terms of having the worst weather, and that it ranked 177th in total cost of services and 179th in available activities and attractions. It scored better at 164th in availability of wedding facilities and services.
To some, the ranking might be construed as a negative. However Karen Jedson, Director of the Warwick Department of Tourism Culture and Development, said that being on the list at all is a positive thing for the city.
“We’re on the list, which is a good thing,” she said. “I think if we could control the weather, we would be the best place in Rhode Island to get married.”
Jedson touted the city’s available facilities, which includes multiple places to purchase flowers, cakes, buy dresses and rent tuxedos – all in addition to the fact that Warwick has more hotel rooms than any other city in Rhode Island. She mentioned all the options are easily accessible on www.warwickweddings.com/index.html.
Jedson also mentioned the various unique destinations couples can get married in, like Aldrich Mansion, Clouds Hill Mansion and Harbor Lights.
“There are 6,200 weddings a day, according to some publications out there,” she said. “Being on that list is a good thing.”
Las Vegas, Orlando, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Miami, San Diego, San Francisco, Chicago, New York and Portland rounded out the top 10 (with Vegas as the top ranked city).
