The Warwick boys hockey co-op grabbed another statement win when it beat visiting Mount St. Charles in a 3-2 thriller last Friday night at Thayer Arena.

Warwick held a 2-0 lead deep in the second period, but the Mounties would get on the board and then tie things up in the third with just over three minutes remaining.

Warwick forward Richie Cavanaugh would break away with the puck with and score the game-winner with 22 seconds remaining to secure the victory.

“Three minutes left, they scored, but we just weren’t going to let that happen. We had that positive attitude on the bench. We got the break, beat them wide and got the goal. It was huge, it was great for the boys. We have a great group of guys this year, we’re a very tight-knit group so it was great,” said Cavanaugh.

“We had to pick it up. We had that one bad mistake, but we’ve battled through adversity this year. We’ve been behind in games, have battled back, have played a lot of tight games and we’ve just had to battle through. The mistake was made and now you’ve got to just reach down a little bit deeper,” said Warwick coach Mike Boyajian of the team’s approach after blowing the two-goal lead.

Warwick got on the board early and grabbed the 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Cooper Grossguth and Ethan Pezzullo.

A key moment in the game came in the third period when Warwick had to kill a five-minute penalty, some of which was five-on-three.

“The biggest thing in that game was killing the five-minute power-play. The goaltender was solid, the kids played solid, they reached down deep and came through. Richie Cavanaugh, being a sophomore, he made that rush and made a great play. Both teams had opportunities throughout the game, I’m proud of our boys,” said Boyajian.

Cavanaugh added two assists in the win, while Grossguth, Gerard Schifino and Charlie Clements also chipped in assists. Goalie Braxton Bragg finished with 32 saves in net.

The team turned around and beat Barrington 4-3 the following night. Ryan Barlow led the way with a pair of goals while Sean Mullaney and Cavanaugh added the others. The win improved the team’s record to 6-2 and pushed it into third place in Division I.

With wins over Mount and Hendricken, the team is confident and poised to make a playoff push.

“We’re super confident. We knew that we were bringing almost all the same guys back this year so we came in this year confident,” said Cavanaugh.

Boyajian added: “We believe in ourselves and we pull for one another. When they tied it up, we said, ‘let’s forget about it and go get another goal.’ Fortunately we did.”
