RECKLESS DRIVING

Around 11:37 a.m., Jan. 23, Warwick Police Officer Jacob T. Elderkin was on traffic patrol when he heard a radio report for a motor vehicle accident with one vehicle on its roof near 361 Jefferson Boulevard.

Upon arrival, Elderkin found two vehicles involved in the crash, and made contact with the first driver, later identified as Terrance M. Peddy, 21, of 114C Ward St., Roxbury, Massachusetts.

Peddy told police that he was friends with the two females in the other vehicle, and said he was speeding and going around the other car.

“While on scene, Peddy admitted that he was operating recklessly, stating that he was going approximately 90 miles per hour at the time of the collision,” Elderkin wrote.

Peddy allegedly told police that the passenger’s side of his vehicle made contact with the driver’s side of the other car.

Based on evidence left in the roadway, it appeared that the other car mounted the curb and eventually struck a utility pole, drove up the pole, flipped and landed on its roof, according to the police incident report.

Peddy was arrested and charged with Reckless Driving And Other Offenses Against Public (a misdemeanor). He was held to appear in front of the Bail Commissioner.

OBSTRUCTING OFFICER

Around 12:32 p.m., Jan. 23, Warwick police investigated the report of a woman slumped over the steering wheel of a vehicle with the engine running, outside Dollar Tree, 1800 Post Road.

Police found the driver unconscious in the driver’s seat when they arrived, and later discovered the car had been reported stolen out of Providence on Jan. 21.

The woman, later identified as Marlene G. Espinal, 46, of 228 Narragansett Ave., Providence, told police she had used Fentanyl within the last five minutes, according to the police incident report.

She allegedly told police that she had snorted approximately one gram and that she is a daily user of Fentanyl, according to the police report.

Rescue arrived on scene and administered Narcan to the female as a preventative measure, police said. She was later transported to Kent Hospital for evaluation. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

Warwick police later responded to Kent Hospital where they were informed Espinal told rescue personnel that she “could not go back to prison” and that she was out on probation, according to the police report. She also allegedly attempted to flee the hospital, but was secured by hospital security.

Espinal allegedly told police that her name was “Rosanna Maria.” A fingerprint check later confirmed she was in fact Espinal, and police discovered she had three active Superior Court Bench Warrants.

Espinal was charged with Driving Without Consent of Owner or Lessee and Obstructing Officer in Execution of Duty. She was also held to answer to the three bench warrants.

SHOPLIFTING

Around 10:13 a.m., Dec. 18, Warwick police responded to Target, 400 Bald Hill Road, to investigate a reported shoplifting incident.

Upon arrival, police made contact with the store’s Assets Protections Specialist who provided video footage of a customer alleged to have taken items from the store without paying at least seven times.

Police later identified the suspect as Stephanie Dimaio, 31, of 35 Mumford St., Coventry.

“Dimaio was captured on camera during seven different dates concealing items at the self-checkout register where she would pass all points of final sale with no attempt to pay for the concealed items,” Warwick Police Officer Oliver M. Pinheiro wrote in the incident report.

On Nov. 20, 2021, Dimaio allegedly concealed a Nintendo Switch controller valued at $79.99, and then exited the store without paying.

On Nov. 21, 2021, Dimaio was allegedly spotted again, this time taking two Nintendo Switch controllers valued at a total of $159.98.

On Nov. 23, 2021, it happened again, and Dimaio allegedly concealed two more Nintendo Switch controllers valued at a total of $159.98 and left without paying.

On Nov. 24, 2021, Dimaio returned to the store and allegedly took two more Nintendo Switch controllers, valued at a total of $159.98.

On Dec. 1, 2021, Dimaio allegedly did it again, making off with two more controllers.

On Dec. 6, 2021, Dimaio allegedly concealed Loreal Multi-Faceted and Neutrogena products valued at $21.98.

And then on Dec. 17, Dimaio allegedly concealed a Polaroid picture frame valued at $80.

Based on video surveillance Warwick Police decided to charge Dimaio with seven counts of shoplifting.

On Jan. 23, Coventry Police transferred custody of Dimaio to Warwick Police. She was booked, photographed, fingerprinted and placed in a cell.

Dimaio was given a Third District Court summons for the seven counts of misdemeanor shoplifting with a Feb. 22 court date.
