RESISTING ARREST

Around 6:09 a.m., March 6, Warwick Police Officer Nathaniel Gray stopped at Cumberland Farms, 87 West Natick Road to “utilize the restroom.”

On his way into the store, a clerk stopped Gray and told him “that a male had been in the restroom for approximately 30 minutes and that she would like him dispersed from the establishment.”

The clerk told police that she and another clerk were approached by the man in a threatening manner outside the store.

Gray opened the bathroom door and observed David Gumpton, 35, homeless, standing in the center of the room. In the incident report, Gray notes that he has had multiple encounters with Gumpton in the past, and served him with a No Trespass Order from the Cumberland Farms store on Nov. 12, 2021.

“Gumpton was immediately confrontational, calling me a ‘b----’ multiple times and stated that he was not going to leave the property,” Gray wrote in the incident report. “Gumpton stated multiple times that he would physically assault me.”

Gray escorted Gumpton outside. After a struggle, Gray took Gumpton into custody.

Gumpton has been charged with Willful Trespass, Resisting Legal or Illegal Arrest and Disorderly Conduct. Gumpton is being held at the ACI as a probation violator.

WEAPON CHARGE

Around 3:34 a.m., March 14, Warwick Police passing the Motel 6, at 20 Jefferson Boulevard, noticed a man named Robert Slaney, 24, who lives at the motel.

Police engaged Slaney, and looked up his criminal background to check for outstanding warrants.

Slaney had an active warrant out of Third District Court for failure to appear for arraignment on a previous charge of Unlawful Breaking and Entering.

Police searched Slaney and found five syringes in his pants’ pockets, a black knife and folded up piece of paper, which he told police contained fentanyl.

The concealed knife measured 3 and 3/8 inches, over the 3-inch limit, so police seized the blade.

Slaney was charged with one count of Weapons Other Than Firearms Prohibited and arrested on the warrant.

The suspected fentanyl amounted to 1 gram and has been submitted for lab results.

DRIVING WITHOUT CONSENT

At 9:19 p.m., March 16, Warwick Police received a report that a man went into Conimicut Liquors, 1230 West Shore Road, and when he came out his car was gone.

“The suspect who stole his car was described as a heavy set, white male with a red hat and red sweatshirt,” Warwick Police Officer Timothy W. Lipka wrote in the incident report.

Lipka took a post on Interstate-95 North by Exit 15 and eventually observed a vehicle matching the stolen vehicle description.

He pulled alongside the driver and matched the man’s description to the one suspected of taking the vehicle. He followed the vehicle and exited the highway at Exit 16 toward Elmwood Avenue. Once backup arrived, Lipka conducted a traffic stop.

“I along with Officers on scene conducted a high risk traffic stop,” Lipka wrote. “I exited my vehicle and deployed canine Haki at my side on lead. I issued commands for the suspect to exit the vehicle and walk back towards the sound of my voice. The suspect complied and I had him get on his knees and put his hands on his head.”

The driver was identified as William Leonard, 42, homeless. He was arrested and charged with Driving Without Consent (a felony) and was held pending his court appearance on March 17.

Leonard advised that he is homeless and can get mail at Harrington Hall as he is a registered sex offender,” Lipka wrote.

WARRANT ARREST

At 11:39 a.m. on March 25, Cranston Police arrested Robert Magliocco, 73, of 175 Elwyn St., Cranston, on a Warwick Police Arrest Warrant as a result of a traffic accident at 97 Fletcher Ave. Magliocco was transferred to the Warwick Police Department.

DISORDERLY CONDUCT

At 4:40 p.m. on March 27, Cranston Police arrested Ronald Hunold, 26, of 249 Draper Ave., Apt. B, Warwick, on charges of disorderly conduct. The arrest was the result of a disturbance call at Miller’s Crossing on Bald Hill Road Hunold awaited arraignment.

CYBERSTALKING

At 9 a.m. on March 23, Cranston Police arrested Nikolas Dixon, 26, of 16 Bettez St., West Warwick, on charges of Domestic Cyberstalking and Domestic Disorderly Conduct. The arrest was the result of Dixon turning himself in at headquarters. Dixon was transported to Third District Court.

BENCH WARRANT

Around 11:40 a.m., March 19, Johnston Police were dispatched to the Bel Air Motor Inn, at 2154 Hartford Ave., to disperse a man from the premises.

Upon arrival, Johnston Police Officer Thomas Santurri spoke with motel employees who told him they wanted James M. Verrill, who was staying with friends in Unit 10, to be trespassed from the premises. Motel staff told police that Verrill, of 882 Blackplain Road, North Smithfield, “has been causing arguments and issues with other tenants of the motel,” according to the incident report.

After police made contact with Verrill they discovered he had an active Third District Court Bench Warrant for failure to appear at a Pretrial Conference tied to Driving with a Suspended/Revoked license out of the Warwick Police Department.

Verrill was taken into custody and transported back to police headquarters, processed and taken to the ACI Men’s Intake facility.

Verrill was also documented as trespassed from the Bel Air Motor Inn.

BENCH WARRANT

At 4:55 p.m., March 18, Johnston Police responded to the Bel Air Motor Inn, at 2154 Hartford Ave., to disperse an “unruly female.”

The “calling party/victim,” a motel employee, told police that Charlene M. Patterson, who gave the hotel as her address, had become “highly irate and began to strike him in the head and ripped off his necklace.” The victim told police she “continued to hit him” while “yelling profanities” and “he was forced to push her out of the establishment in an attempt to protect himself.” A witness at the scene backed up the victim’s story.

The victim told police that he did not wish to pursue a criminal complaint but wanted to have Patterson “dispersed from the property.”

Procedural checks revealed Patterson had an active Superior Court warrant for failure to appear at an arraignment stemming from an arrest by Warwick Police for Possession of Schedule I drugs. Patterson was taken into custody, cuffed, transported to headquarters and held pending transfer to the ACI Women’s Intake.

ARSON

On March 16, the Statewide Grand Jury returned an indictment charging Eva Lanoue, 30, North Kingstown, with one count of first-degree arson, one count of third-degree arson, one count of insurance fraud, one count of obtaining money under false pretenses, and one count of giving a false document to an agent, employee or public official.

The alleged acts occurred in the city of Warwick on various days and dates between April 1, 2018 and April 30, 2018. The Warwick Police Department conducted the investigation. The defendant was arraigned on March 21 in Kent County Superior Court.
