For the second consecutive year, WalletHub has rated Warwick as the fifth safest city in United States.

The news announced last week doesn’t come as a surprise to Col. Bradford Connor. In an email the Police Chief said, “Traditionally the city scores fairly high in this report. It’s a testament to the city as a whole. Our professional public safety entities which are supported by our elected officials and citizens alike contribute to the great success of Warwick and its high ratings.”

While the rating takes into account such statistics as traffic fatalities, the number of law enforcement personnel and assaults it also looks at unemployment, households with emergency savings and uninsured population. It also takes into account a natural disaster risk level where Warwick scored 22nd where 1 is considered the safest.

The study compared 182 cities, including the 150 most populated U.S. cities, plus at least two of the most populated cities in each state. Warwick and Providence were the Rhode Island cities in the study. Providence rated the 46th safest city in the country just ahead of Glendale, CA. The overall safest city was Nashua, NH and down at the bottom of the list was St. Louis.

According to the WalletHub website, the ratings were based on 41 key metrics where Americans “feel most protected against life’s hazards, including nonphysical forms of danger.”

With 1 being the best rating the study ranked Warwick 57th in the number of traffic fatalities per capita, 77th for the ratio of law enforcement employees per capita, third in the number of assaults per capita, first in the unemployment rate, 68th in the percent of households with emergency savings and 9th in the percent of uninsured.

Warwick was ranked the country’s seventh safest city in 2021 and the 12th safest in 2020.
