WARWICK SHOWCASE

EZRA
* * * ½
(Comedy/Drama About Autism)

It’s not easy raising an autistic child.

It is even harder when the parents are divorced and share their time with their child.

Bobby Cannavale gives a great performance as Max, the stand-up comic who co-raises his 12-year-old son, Ezra, trying hard, too hard at times, to do the right thing.

Max takes Ezra to comedy clubs to see, and at times heckle, his performances. He works autism into his act, at times coming away with a dud.

Max and his ex-wife quarrel a lot over how Max is raising Ezra, causing Max to kidnap the boy and take him on a long road trip, where some interesting things, both funny and poignant, happen.

His ex-wife (Rose Byrne, his real-life partner) and father (Robert De Niro) go after him, eventually sending out an Amber Alert.

Max’s agent (Whoopi Goldberg) gets him a gig on the Jimmy Kimmel Show, where eventually the family comes together in a dramatic, poignant closing.

Funny and poignant is the best way to describe this movie. It will tug at your heartstrings as you feel for all of the people involved.
