Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
* * *
Here we go again. Yet another Kong/Godzilla movie.
Last year it was the Japanese-made Kong X 2, which was pure camp.
This time the American writers, director and actors take themselves seriously as the two monsters fight each other and then come together to save the world against a new mega-villain called Skar King.
The two-hour movie begins with Kong fighting enemy apes and other-worldly creatures in Hollow Earth.
Meanwhile, Dr. Ilene and her adopted deaf daughter are working at the Monarch Project, trying to figure out strange energy pulses in the atmosphere.
Kong ends up above ground with a toothache, which prompts Ilene’s Australian friend to come to the rescue. Along with a podcaster and pilot they take their flying ship into Hollow Earth to see what’s happening, only to discover another civilization threatened by Skar King.
Meanwhile, Godzilla is sleeping in Rome’s Colosseum, curled up like a kitten, only to be disturbed enough to start destroying the city.
Somehow (I think I dozed off for a minute) everybody is above ground destroying everything in sight, when Kong and Godzilla communicate that it might be a good thing if they join forces to fight off Skar King, save themselves and humanity.
Good special effects.
They live happily ever after…until somebody decides to make another sequel.
