The Department of Environmental Management (DEM) hosted the fourth and final event of the 2013 Rhode Island Great Outdoors Pursuit at Burlingame State Campground in Charlestown on Aug. 17.
The grand finale event concluded with a grand prize ceremony where pre-registered Pursuit participants won prizes of outdoor equipment donated by local retailers and sponsors. The grand prize winning team, “3 Stoogers,” of Coventry, won a family kayaking package that included four kayaks, life vests, paddles, and a free week of camping. The first place winning team, “S’More Fun,” of Cranston, won a family camping package that included a Coleman tent, sleeping bags, camp chairs, cooler and a free week of camping. The second place winning team, “Kickin Kavanaghs,” of Warwick, won a geo-caching package that included two handheld GPS units and a how-to guide. The third place winning team, “Davis Devils,” of Warwick, won a family fishing package that included rods, tackle box and camp chairs.
DEM, with support from the RI Department of Health, launched the Rhode Island Great Outdoors Pursuit in 2008 to reunite families with the outdoors, encourage more physical activity, build the next generation of environmental stewards and showcase state parks and forests. This year, 408 teams registered for the Pursuit, including over 1,720 participants, who visited different facilities and took part in outdoor adventures and learned about environmental and health issues.
