Bishop Hendricken’s Jimmie Sauro is the Warwick Beacon Wrestler of the Year.
The Hawks rolled to a third-straight state title at the Providence Career and Technical Academy this winter.
It was a total team effort as the Hawks separated themselves from the pack on day one and ran away with the title.
However, it was Sauro that stood out for Hendricken the most, along with freshman Cam Nappi.
Sauro, who was a junior this year, battled through a plethora of injuries throughout the season, but healed up just in time for the state championships where he would roll to an individual state title at the 182-pound weight class.
“He had a great year and was dedicated the whole time,” Hendricken head coach Kevin Hennessey said of Sauro. “He showed great leadership as a junior, and he was a leader in the room.”
After a fourth-place finish at 170 in his sophomore year, Sauro stepped up and moved up a weight class for the betterment of the team.
It paid off on both ends, as Sauro not only helped to boost the team to a state title, but he also got his individual title as well.
According to Hennessey, that’s just the kind of kid that Sauro is – a very selfless teammate that will do anything to increase the success of team.
“He was really about the team first and himself second,” Hennessey said. “And that’s not me just saying that, he would tell you that.”
Sauro was one of only two Hawks to earn an individual state championship, as Nappi won at 106.
Sauro will return for his senior year in the fall, as he’ll look to lead Hendricken to a fourth consecutive state championship and its 11th overall.
