To the Editor:
As a citizen, taxpayer and teacher in the City of Warwick, I am very disappointed and dismayed by the decision of the School Committee to give notice of a special meeting at 4 p.m. on Friday and their decision to hold the meeting at 7 a.m. on a Tuesday morning.
While the School Committee may have met the letter of the law for open meetings, they certainly did not meet the spirit of the law that allows for public comment.
The recent scandal involving the school administration may have warranted a special meeting, but it is unconscionable that the School Committee used this as an excuse to award several large contracts at a time when the public had almost no opportunity to attend or comment. The members of the School Committee should be ashamed of their failure to hold an open and accessible meeting. This meeting exemplified their lack of courage and lack of concern for the people they are supposed to serve.

Don't worry Karen.
There is plenty of shame to go around for the members of the school committee. Have you read the Ragosta Report? You know, the one they said was "verbal"? The one they tried to keep us from reading because it showed how poorly they handled the Mario Atoyian issue? You said "dismayed" and "disappointed". May I add "disgusted" to that?
I do see one new member that impresses me however. Phil Thornton, the new Superintendant of Schools gets an A for effort. He came into a volital situation that he DID NOT CAUSE, and he has worked harder than the last four superintendents put together. I don't always agree with his decisions, but he is really trying and seems to have the students best interest at heart. Stay involved. This one is long from finished.
Enjoy your Summer.

Mr. Corrente you are completely wrong about Phil Thorton he has bounced from school district to district now Warwick gets stuck with his complete incompetency. He is there for the check, he did nothing when 4 young girls were being inappropriately touched by another student and did nothing like the crew he leads "The Cover Up Crew". He is the leader followed by the incompetent Lynn Dambruch and the useless John Gannon who cover things up at Norwood Elementary. Can't wait to leave this city and all Thortons lies uncovered.

Dear Imhere,
David Laplante stole thousands from the taxpayers. He did it openly, blatantly, and aggressively, as if he had someones permission. He even had the taxpayers pay for a fence around his home (you don't need a search warrant to see that). Phil Thornton wasn't possibly the first one to notice that, but he acted with zero-tolerance. He acted immediately. He acted decisively. At least in that one situation, you have to give him a lot of credit. No one before him had the courage to do what he did.
Agree?

Mr. Corrente maybe Phil Thorton did a good job there because maybe it was to big to cover up. A major situation at Norwood Elementary he fell flat on his face trying to pull the blanket on for the cover up. He just has recruits like Lynn Dambruch and John Gannon. They are part of "The Cover Up Crew" and Thorton is the leader. He had been bounced to many school districts and is just there for the check at the end of the week, he can care less on who he hurts in the process, but like I said he won't get to cover up the issues at Norwood. He is on the Hummel Report and also on been on wpro 630 am and his cover ups have been shared by many on social media.
