Can't you just envision the state reps and senators when they used to convene at the state house? "If we could only soak the few remaining rich, we could do so much more..." RI taxpayers need to sit back and reflect on what, exactly, they are receiving in the form of public services proportional to the taxes they are paying. To wit: New Hampshire, with no state income or sales tax, has the highest literacy rate of all 50 states. The lowest? High tax California, NY, and NJ. According to USA Today, RI has the 9th highest tax burden in the country per taxpayer. In exchange, we have the 5th lowest median SAT scores in the country coupled with the third worst-kept system of state highways. Hence, in exchange for already high taxes, we receive deplorable public services. Can anyone at the state house say, with a straight face, that higher taxes will fix any of this?
