68 tickets issued in 4 hours to Airport Rd. speeders

About a dozen Warwick Police officers were stationed along Airport Road last Thursday as part of a traffic enforcement effort.

In four hours, the police issued 68 citations, handed out 20 warnings and made one arrest for operating on a suspended license.

“They really stepped up enforcement,” said Mayor Frank Picozzi during an interview Tuesday.

While Capt. Robert Hart said police issued citations for mobile phone usage and seat belt infractions, one issue was addressed more than any other.

“Speeding was the primary reason for tickets,” said Hart.

Picozzi said speeding is one of the biggest complaints the city gets, and he said that after a number of accidents on Airport Road as of late, it was decided to have extra enforcement on the road.

“It's not a speed trap, they're visible,” said Picozzi.

Hart said that during the 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. time period the fastest car was clocked in at 60 MPH in a 35 MPH zone and 50 MPH in the 25 MPH zone.

On Tuesday Hart said police are going to continue to step up enforcement in different areas.

“We plan on making this a regular operation, hopefully at least twice a month. Our traffic unit regularly conducts multiple officer enforcements throughout the city, but this was a much larger deployment of officers and was quite effective,” said Hart.

When asked where police will be doing enforcement next, Hart declined to say.

“There are many spots in the city that have traffic complaints, we hope to visit all of them,” said Hart.
