Not since Ron Phipps, who was then a student, started the Bishop Hendricken Hunger Walk 49 years ago has the Bishop of the Diocese of Providence joined students and faculty in the walk to raise funds to help the needy. That changed last Thursday, Maundy Thursday as know to Christians, when Coadjutor Bishop of Providence Richard Henning, following a blessing at St. Kevin Church and Father Robert Marciano, pastor of the church and president of the all-boys high school, set off in the foggy morning on a 10-mile route that would take them to Hoxsie Four Corners then south on West Shore Road to Oakland Beach Avenue and then back to the school. The walkers, who each contributed $20, were told to stay on the sidewalk and walk. Nonetheless, about 30 of the more than 600 students participating, presumably members of the track team, ran the distance. Lending inspiration to the walkers, Bishop Henning covered about half the course. Father Marciano said the walk raised more than $10,000 that went to Amos House, Emanuel House, Little Sister of the Poor, and St. Vincent de Paul. (Warwick Beacon photos)
