One of the Union’s Civil War heroes who defended Culp’s Hill during the Battle of Gettysburg from a far larger Confederate force, General George Sears Greene, will visit his tomb this Sunday at 2 p.m. Greene, a West Point graduate, was 60 years old when he enlisted in the Union Army.
Playing his role as part of the Warwick Commission on Historical Cemeteries’ Cemetery Awareness Weeks event is reenactor Paul Bourget. He will be accompanied by Brian Guiot who will provide information about Greene as a civil engineer and Civil War Brigadier General, information about some of the other folks buried near him, as well as the history of Greene’s headstone traveling from Culp’s Hill in Gettysburg, and the relics in City Hall including muster roll and Greene’s bronze plaque and sword.
Information about the enhancements around this cemetery including signage, parking and stairway will also be provided. The Major General George Sears Greene Cemetery is located at the end of Tanner Avenue, beyond the FOP hall in Apponaug.
