North seniors win 2nd state title

The Warwick North softball seniors put on a clinic in the RI State Championship series last week when they topped Tiverton in back to back games to advance to this weekend’s regional tournament in Worcester, Ma.

North would beat Tiverton in the first game 14-0. Reagan Motta, Bryce Principe and Holly Cameron led the way at the plate, each recording multiple RBI while Madison Tuirok picked up three hits and scored three runs. Emma Manzo, Haley Boudreau, Bella Boudreau and Adrianna Pettinato also knocked in runs in the victory.

Haley Boudreau, Principe and Manzo combined for a no-hit shutout in the circle for North and finished with seven strikeouts overall.

North stayed hot to roll to a 9-2 win the following day.

Motta finished with three RBI while Haley Boudreau and Principe knocked in a pair of runs each. Principe was strong in the circle, pitching a complete game and allowing just two runs while striking out four batters.

Next for North is regionals where they will be facing clubs throughout New England. Last year’s juniors team advanced to regionals and picked up a pair of wins in the pool play format.

With a few new players on the team, manager Gary Dombeck was thrilled to see the club perform at a high level as it prepares for the next leg of the race.

“It was their first time playing together. We have some new faces on the team this year. Overall, it was a good couple of games for us. It was good for us to get a couple under our belt to tune up. (Last year) was a good step in the right direction for our group and we’re looking to build off that going into this one,” said Dombeck.

North’s lineup is filled with players that compete year round and travel across the country frequently.

“For some of these girls, it’s their fourth or fifth regional trip, so it’s definitely a seasoned group. It’s an experienced group, a lot of these girls play travel already so I don’t think they’re going to be nervous. When you play the bigger states, there’s obviously a much bigger pool to draw from. I expect some good competition up there. I think it will be good for our group,” Dombeck said.

With the team’s first regional game coming this Saturday, Dombeck hopes the players take it day by day and play selfless softball.

“Just going one game at a time. This is probably the most talented group that we have sent to the regionals. If everyone can do their job, have a team-first attitude, then I think we will be successful,” said Dombeck.

Members of the state champion Warwick North team include: Adrianna Pettinato, Bella Boudreau, Bryce Principe, Emma Manzo, Gretchen Dombeck, Hannah Fitzpatrick, Holly Cameron, Haley Boudreau, Lia Wasilewski, Madison Tuirok, Marin Prest, Reagan Motta and Skyler Hawes. Coaches are manager Gary Dombeck and assistants James Tuirok and Debi Jaques.
