Thanks to Robert Lancia, who served as a State Representative from Cranston and declared as a Republican candidate for the Second Congressional District before incumbent James Langevin announced he won’t seek reelection and later withdrew thereby averting a GOP primary with Allan Fung, the Pilgrim social studies class of Terri Hebert was recently visited by Lt. Gov. Sabina Matos. A native of the Dominican Republic , Matos is the first woman of color to hold the post. She described coming to this country as a girl with her family and the challenges she faced in running for office. Prior to being tapped for the job by Governor Dan McKee, Matos was president of the Providence City Council. The class asked pointed questions about discrimination and whether she feels capable of filling the role of governor should she need to fill the position. She said she is prepared should that happen. Lancia, who is working on a master’s degree in secondary education at Providence College, is in the process of completing a 30 hour requirement as a teacher observer. He chose to be with the Pilgrim social studies class. Here Lancia talks with Hebert and Matos at the end of the class. (Warwick Beacon photo)
