COVID-19 causing delays in collection of yard waste

Posted

With Governor Gina Raimondo’s two week ‘pause’ in effect, combined with an increase of COVID-19 cases and related quarantining measures in City departments, Mayor Solomon is advising residents that yard waste pickup is presently delayed by four to five days.

As an alternative, residents are reminded that they may drop off yard waste at the City’s compost station, which is located at 111 Range Road; hours are Monday – Saturday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

All essential City services are continuing uninterrupted.

“Our crews are working overtime to get caught up, but unfortunately we’re dealing with a very challenging combination of circumstances: we’ve had a spike in COVID-19 cases, which means some departments are short-staffed; we’ve seen an increase in the amount of yard waste and bulky items for pickup as more people are working from home or quarantined, and they’re doing home improvement projects; and this is the season for yard clean-up,” Mayor Solomon said in a statement.

“We’re asking people to be patient with yard waste pickup, as that is taking longer than usual. I’d like to thank our dedicated City employees, many of whom are putting themselves on the front lines of this pandemic, for making sure that these services continue.”

As part of the City’s COVID-19 control plan, public access to City buildings is available by appointment only. Residents are encouraged to use online resources. Mayor Solomon asks that residents visit each City department's web page for more information as well as online services available; department pages can be found by toggling over the "Government" tab on the menu bar at the top of the City’s home page. The City is continuing to provide essential services, including public safety; sanitation, including trash, recycling, and yard waste pickup; wastewater treatment; the limited senior grab-and-go lunch program, and other critical City functions.

Residents are urged to check the Rhode Island Department of Health webpage (health.ri.gov/covid) regularly for the most accurate, updated information, as well as warwickri.gov for City information.
