Taiwan in Cranston

Mayor Allan Fung and the Cranston Public Library present Taiwan Sublime, Four Photography Masters’ Visions of the Treasure Island. This cultural event is being offered in conjunction with the Taipei Economic and Culture office in Boston.
An opening reception and show will take place on Sunday, April 29 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the William Hall Library. The event will feature performances of traditional line dances, folk dances and drums. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn traditional arts and crafts through short demonstrations of lantern making and paper cutting. Food and refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public. The William Hall Library is located at 1825 Broad Street in Cranston.
The full Taiwan Sublime photo exhibit will be on display at the Central Library from June 2 to 30 in the Main Meeting Room Gallery. For more information, visit www.cranstonlibrary.org.

Y Healthy Kids Day is this Saturday

This Saturday, April 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Cranston YMCA is offering free activities for the entire family at Healthy Kids Day.
Healthy Kids Day is open to the community and features a range of activities including obstacle courses, swimming, dance, live music, Zumba, nutritious foods and snacks, and tips on preventing disease and keeping children safe.

Pathways for Parents at CCAP

Pathways for Parents is an eight-session parent education program through the Comprehensive Community Action Program (CCAP), designed to help people learn better parenting skills.
The next session starts in May and runs for eight consecutive weeks. All classes will be held at CCAP, located at 311 Doric Ave. For more information, contact CCAP at 467-9610.

Paddle Fest

Now is the time to get out and explore your local waterways! Join REI, located in Chapel View, as they celebrate Paddle Fest this Saturday, April 28 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Whether you are a novice or experienced paddler, there will be activities and special promotions throughout the day.
There is no charge for this event.

Rotary May breakfast

The Cranston Rotary Club’s annual May Breakfast Fundraiser will be held May 6 at Park View Middle School. Tickets are $7 per person for this all you can eat event, which starts at 8 a.m.
The monies raised help to provide scholarships for high school students who are graduating from Cranston high schools.
There will also be raffles for a number of items, along with a separate raffle for an iPad2, for which the raffle tickets are $20 each. Tickets for the Breakfast and the raffles can be purchased from Rotarians, including the following Rotarians at their businesses: Don Roy at Midas Muffler on Reservoir Ave.; Keith Lavimodiere at Washington Trust Bank; Mike Norklun at the Cranston YMCA; Mark Saccoccio at Saccoccio & Associates on Park Ave.; as well as through the Cranston Rotary Club’s president, Cindy Fogarty of Fogarty Law Office, located in the Calart Tower Building, off Reservoir Ave.

Rocky Hill Latin awards

Out of 45 Rocky Hill middle and high school students who took the National Latin Exam, 25 received accolades. Congratulations to Raymond Mancini and Kayla DiSegna, both of Cranston, who received U.S. Magna Cum Laude.

Did you know?

The month of May was named for the Greek goddess Maia, the goddess of fertility, the goddess of May. Perhaps this is why Mother’s Day has been established during this very month. Maia was the eldest of her female siblings and played a motherly role.
