Former Patriots star Brock to speak at Our Lady of Grace

Remember Pete Brock, the former New England Patriots star who still holds the special distinction of playing every position on the offensive line?

The NFL All-Pro and Oregon native – who hung up his helmet and cleats back in 1987, and now serves as president of the Patriots Alumni Association and works with the club’s flagship radio network – is coming to Johnston.

The Rev. Peter J. Gower, the popular pastor at Our Lady of Grace Roman Catholic Church, this week announced that Brock will speak about “Faith and the NFL” at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 30, during the Johnston-based parish’s Holy Name Society meeting.

The meeting, though, is not limited to members of the Holy Name Society.

“I’m extending a personal invitation to all the men and women of our community to take in the March 30 meeting,” Gower said. “I’m confident you’ll enjoy meeting and listening to Pete. He has a wonderful story and is certainly a one of the great role models of our time.”

The event won’t be the first time Gower has met Brock.

“I personally met Pete when he was playing in the NFL,” Gower said. “I baptized all his children and came to appreciate his great love for his fair and the church. I know he will be an inspiration to all who to listen on March 30 in our parish hall.”

There is no fee for the event, and as Gower added: “The Holy Name Society provides a wonderful opportunity for the men of the parish to get together and socialize, and we would like as many people as possible to come and learn about how Pete Brock’s post-play performance has truly shown his strength and leadership.”

Brock’s story began when No. 58 starred at Jesuit High School in Portland, Ore.

Growing up in Beaverton, Ore., Brock was a highly-recruited prep star and chose the University of Colorado for his collegiate career. There, he established himself as one of the top linemen in the country, and was taken by the Patriots in the first round of the 1976 NFL draft. He was the 12th overall pick.

Brock played in 152 games for the Patriots and started at every one of the offensive line positions – including tight end – during his outstanding NFL career.

“Pete was part of a unit that led the way to the NFL single-season rushing record which still stands today,” Gower, a dedicated Pats fan, noted. “He was a three-time Pro Bowl alternate, and among his many accolades was being named to the Patriots All-Decade Team for the 1980s.”

Among Brock’s many credits is being named the 1986 Miller NFL Lineman of the Year, being named to the University of Colorado Team of the Century, and in 2009 being inducted into the prestigious Oregon Sports Hall of Fame.

“In his post-football life, Pete has taken the unique lessons he learned from the perspective of an NFL offensive lineman on what it takes to win and applied them to business and where he has excelled as an entrepreneur,” Gower said.
