Happy campers ‘shine Jesus' light’ at St. Peter's

St. Peter’s Vacation Bible School continues to reach to new heights.

From firing vinegar-and-baking-soda rockets to dressing up as Bible characters, there’s plenty of fun in store for kids at St. Peter’s Vacation Bible School. Running from June 26 to 30 under the guidance of parish Faith Formation Coordinator Margaret Andreozzi It’s Andreozzi’s 14th year running the summer camp, which started in 2008—COVID-19 notwithstanding. Campers pre-K to grade 4 learn about science and the Catholic faith in tandem, with special guest Stellar: Shine Jesus’ Light visiting Tuesday to teach about rocketry.

“This is rocket science,” said Daniel DiMase, president and CEO of Aerocyonics of East Greenwich who was leading the hands-on program. Apart from helping kids make rockets, DiMase talked about the physics of rocketry.

Stations at the summer camp range from the “Imagination Station” to the “Bible Room.” Andreozzi says the Bible Room, where campers shine flashlights (representing the light of Jesus) and reenact scenes from the Bible, is fondly remembered by many of the past campers she meets from time to time. Additionally, campers learn about service through contributions to the parish’s charitable work, with donations being made to a different organization each year.

This year, it’s The Village for RI Foster and Adoptive Families, and the kids are bringing in items to be put in “welcome bags” for teenagers in foster care.

This partnership would not be possible without Fr. Roger Gagné, St. Peter pastor, who has long supported the Vacation Bible School.

“Without his support, the camp would not be here,” said Andreozzi.
