In the hunt for plastic eggs, cupcakes & burgers

The rage for Easter egg hunts hit the city this year, and if your timing was good - and you weren’t caught speeding - you could watch kids sprint across open fields dotted with colored plastic eggs in a frantic couple of minutes to fill beach buckets in Conimicut, Oakland Beach and City Park. In fact, there was a fourth egg hunt Saturday, scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Oakland Beach branch of the Warwick Boys and Girls Clubs. But let’s start at the beginning at Conimicut Point Park. Usually the Conimicut Village Association hunt is held at Clegg Field, but since the field playground is under reconstruction it was moved to the point park. Visitors were greeted by the Easter bunny and an artistic display of decorated cupcakes, the work of Fritz Murray, 13, grandson of Ginny and Lonnie Barham, aka Easter Bunny. Fritz was up until 4 a.m. Saturday making the cupcakes which were admired and gratefully consumed by visitors. A sweet start for kids and adults. Food, other than candy encased in plastic eggs, was a big post-hunt attraction at Oakland Beach School at the traditional hunt sponsored by the Oakland Beach Association. Members of the Knights of Columbus manned the grills to serve up burger and hotdogs just in time for lunch. We missed the city-sponsored hunt at City Park, but did make it over to the Boys and Girls Club where, to our surprise, kids were seeding the field with eggs. The hunt sponsored by the Hispanic Foster and Adoptive Parent Organization was held later that afternoon. (Text and photos by John Howell)
