When a floor drain in the Veterans Middle High kitchen showed signs of blacking up last Wednesday, personnel didn’t waste time to track down the problem. They found the line connecting to the sewers was broken and could have caused backups into the school. The school was closed before noon Wednesday and a crew went to work unearthing the line that involved removal of a loading dock. Vets remained closed Thursday and Friday of last week. It reopened Monday. Assistant Superintendent Michael McCaffrey said the incident is indicative of the city’s aging schools and underscores the necessity of building new Toll Gate and Pilgrim High Schools.
