When Brooklyn Kraemer, a kindergarten student at Norwood Elementary School returned to school after February break she didn’t have a story about sledding or having fun with her friends.

Instead, she told the class about saving her grandma, Rebecca Vatter.

Since Feb. 24th was a school vacation day, Brooklyn was at her grandmother’s home.

Vatter, who is epileptic, wasn’t feeling good and went outside for some fresh air. While outside she called  for Brooklyn. When Brooklyn went out she found her grandmother couldn’t speak and she was bleeding after having a seizure, falling and hitting her head.

“It was very traumatic for her because she saw the whole event happen,” said Vatter.

Vatter who has been epileptic for 14 years.

“ In my perspective it (seizure) was the worst one,” said Vatter. “I was never injured in the manner that I was and the fact that Brooklyn witnessed it did made it the worst. I had cut my nose and scraped my forehead so my face was covered in blood.”

Brooklyn was scared but was able to quickly Facetime her father. She was then able to unlock Vatter’s phone to call her  uncle Bobby who called 911.

“She took the reins and handled the situation,” said Vatter during a phone interview on Tuesday afternoon.

Vatter wasn’t conscious while Brooklyn was springing in to help.

After hearing the story, Brooklyn’s teacher Stephanie George used it as a lesson on what to do in an emergency.

“We had such a teachable moment,” said George.

George explained kindergartners are usually taught about what to do in emergency situations like fires.

While Brooklyn recalled the story in her classroom Tuesday afternoon George asked the students “what do you do when an emergency happens?”

The class proudly shouted “call 911.”

Last week Brooklyn’s kindergarten  class celebrated the heroic efforts on “super hero day”, along with Brooklyn’s family and the first responders who responded to the incident.

“She’s definitely my little hero for sure,” said Vatter.

Since the incident, Vatter said she is doing well.
