Erring on the side of caution, after talking with Channel 12 weatherman Tony Petrarca, Mayor Frank Picozzi postponed the New Year’s Eve fireworks display scheduled for Rocky Point to Sunday evening. It was a good move. Skies were clear and temperatures were in the 40s. Word quickly spread and hundreds turned out. Bev Wiley, Warwick Parks and Recreation director put the crowd at 2,500, maybe more. Park parking lots quickly filled and police and Department of Public Works personnel opened the fields in the former Rocky Beach section of the park. The six food trucks at the event had long lines, with some running out before the show started. An ongoing raffle of items for youths under 18 from supporting sponsors, with Holly Weber reading off the winning numbers was a hit. (Warwick Beacon photos)
