Rhode Island College fifth-year Lauren Macera (Cranston, R.I.) and freshman Haylie Peacock (West Gardiner, Maine) were recognized by the Little East for their respective performances in a 3-0 week for the Anchorwomen in women’s tennis.

Macera was named the Little East Women’s Tennis Player of the Week. It is the second time this season that she has received this award. Macera went 2-0 at No. 1 singles and 3-0 at No. 1 doubles for the week. For the season, she is 7-0 at No. 1 singles and 8-1 at No. 1 doubles.

Peacock was named the Little East Women’s Tennis Rookie of the Week. It is the second time this season that she has received this award. Peacock went 3-0 in singles, which included her first career win at second singles, and 3-0 in doubles for the week. For the season, she is 9-0 at primarily No. 4 singles and 8-0 at No. 2 doubles.

Strain nabs LEC honors

Rhode Island College freshman forward Michael Strain (West Warwick, R.I.) was named the Little East Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Week for his performance in a pair of Anchormen victories last week.

Strain came off the bench and scored his first collegiate goal as RIC bested Emerson, 3-0, on Sept. 17. He also came in as a reserve and contributed to the club’s, 3-2, win over VTSU Castleton in RIC’s Little East opener on Sept. 21.

For the season, he has played in three games. He has one goal for two points on the season.

Hatfield named RIC softball coach

Rhode Island College has named Lauren Hatfield as the head softball coach.

“Having spent many years in Rhode Island, I am thrilled to return and join the Rhode Island College community,” Hatfield said. “I want to thank Don Tencher, Jo-Ann D’Alessandro and the search committee for this amazing opportunity to lead the softball program. I’m eager to get started and look forward to making a positive impact, while building on the winning tradition at Rhode Island College.”

Hatfield has over 25 years of coaching experience at the college and high school level.

Prior to coming to RIC, she spent six seasons as the associate head softball coach at Worcester State. Before joining the staff at Worcester State, Hatfield spent three years at Franklin Pierce University as an assistant and the head softball coach where she led her team to a record number of wins in one season.

Her college playing experience includes playing shortstop and third base at Boston College, where she led her team in batting average her freshman season and as a catcher at Franklin Pierce University where she holds the program record for highest single season batting average (.481).

A two-time Div. 1 high school state championship catcher at Leominster High School, she has been inducted into the Leominster High School Hall of Fame both as a softball team member and as an individual for her achievements as a three sport athlete. Hatfield has also been inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Franklin Pierce in 1995 and is currently completing a master’s degree in sports management and athletic administration at Lasell.
