Making the switch ahead of time

Following in the wake of Astro Movers of New England that moved Sherman School out of its temporary home at the former Gorton Junior High School and back into Sherman, the school department custodial staff has put on the shine for Oakland Beach School. Prior to the start of school and following an open house, Oakland Beach will operate from Gorton for the academic year as HVAC systems and long overdue improvements are made to the Oakland Beach School. Kevin Oliver, director of facilities and maintenance, said Friday the moves of both Sherman and Oakland Beach schools are ahead of schedule and on budget. As Oakland Beach has a larger student enrollment than Sherman, the school will occupy Gorton rooms that in some cases had not bee used since it closed with the consolidation of secondary schools in 2016. Lynn Dambruch, superintendent, said those rooms have been painted and such technological advancements as Promethean boards are replacing blackboards and chalk. “They’ve done a remarkable job in a short period of time,” said William McCaffrey, assistant superintendent who is pictured here with Dambruch on a tour of Gorton last Friday.
