Mazzulla honored in summer league, Hawks take 2nd

The Johnston Indoor Recreation Center wrapped up its summer basketball tournament last week and also honored the late Dan Mazzulla during the championship game as well.

The league hosts 24 teams across the state and Classical went on to beat Bishop Hendricken in the Division A championship. Rocky Hill would take the Division B title. Johnston went 7-3 in the tournament for the second straight season.

After the league semifinals last week, the rec center unveiled two replica Dan Mazzulla jerseys – one from Bryant University and the other from Johnston High School – where he enjoyed legendary careers as a player. Each jersey will be put on display at the rec center.

Below each jersey in their cases were a handful of Mazzulla’s accomplishments during his time in each school. At Bryant, he was a member of the 2007 Hall of Fame class and finished with 1,390 points, 761 rebounds and reached the NCAA Tournament in both 1978 and 1980. In Johnston High, he finished with 1,217 points and led the team to state championships in 1974 and 1976.

Parks and Rec director Mike Bedrosian, who also coaches the JHS boys basketball team, was thrilled to present the Mazzulla family with the two latest pieces to honor Dan. Bedrosian also said they are looking to make another replica jersey to add to the gym at the high school.

“Everything we do for Danny is obviously well deserved for all that he’s done for the town and the state. Having these jerseys up, the family was happy that we did it,” said Bedrosian.
