Nearing completion

More than a year and a half after it closed because of mold and the decision was made to fully address all renovations to Sherman School, the school is nearing completion. School Department director of construction and capital projects, Steve Gothberg said finalization of the $7.5 million project hinges on Rhode Island Energy to installation of switching gear and tying it into the transformer on school property. That is expected to happen in two to three weeks. At that point the department will be able to test run HVAC systems. Meanwhile, crews are grading and hydro-seeding school grounds and checking out classroom and corridor LED lights. Gothberg said Monday Sherman teachers took a “walk through” recently. An open house for parents and students will be held before the school reopens. During construction, the school operated from the former Gorton Junior High that also houses administration offices. That space is now being readied for Oakland Beach School as HVAC systems and improvements are made there.  In these photos taken Monday, Sheridan Electric personnel check lighting and Peter Carreiro of RJ Nunes & Sons spreads topsoil in front of the school.
