This rendering of the possible layout of an outdoor skating rink at the site of the former City Hall Annex – the dream of Mayor Frank Picozzi – was recently shared with the Appounag Village Association and community members. To be named Warwick Plaza, the rink, landscaping, and buildings for equipment, skate rentals and restrooms is to be financed with federal and state grants. Questions raised during the Planning Board meeting focused on parking and traffic circulation. The proposal calls for the conversion of the one way entrance to the City Hall site from Post Road that would become a walkway to the courtyard between the rink and City Hall. The existing exit next to the library would become two-way. Planners said that is agreeable to St. Barnabas Church. Overall, the plan calls for parking for 132 cars and a NHL size rink, which is believed would be the largest outdoor ice rink in the state. Planners are looking at a roof over the rink. The rink surface would be used for a farmers market, concerts and seating for food truck events during the summer. Beta Engineering is in the process of refining plans and developing specifications so as to advertise for bids on the project. The city is looking for a project completion by June 2024.
