Editor’s note: The following is a selection of posts Mayor Frank Picozzi made to his Facebook page over the past week.  The posts have been edited to include additional pertinent information giving context to the event:

NEW RESCUE: On Sunday  “the City of Warwick added a 5th Rescue Company to the Warwick Fire Department. It is funded with a grant written by members of this Local. With our ever-increasing call volume, it couldn’t have come too soon. R5 went into service at 8:00am. It was dispatched on its first run at 8:26am and was then diverted to a critical call that it was closest to one minute later at 8:27am. Like all of our Rescues, today and every day, it’s been busy since. Rescue 5 is quartered at Station 9 on Commonwealth Ave.”

PEST CONTROL SERVICE: “There was a man in my neighborhood today (Monday evening)  going door to door selling pest control services. He had been to my house before I arrived home and my wife said that he was very aggressive. I saw that he was at my neighbor’s house, and he sold her the service and a truck instantly pulled up. I approached the salesman and asked if he had gotten a permit from the police department to peddle door to door. He said that his boss probably did. I asked him to call his boss and he told me his phone was broken. I said that I would call, and he said that he didn’t know the number. I called the police, and the men gave somewhat evasive answers to the officer’s questions. It ended with the officer telling them they couldn’t solicit without a permit.  My neighbor had ended up signing a contract with an initial down payment with a credit card and a stipulation that if she broke the contract in the next 12 months that she’ll pay a $200 penalty. I can’t speak to the legitimacy of the company, they may be, but the police have taken the information and will investigate. The trucks had NJ plates. Be careful with any door-to-door salesman. Always insist on seeing their permit from the city, that means that they have been vetted.”

In a follow-up call with the Beacon on Wednesday, Picozzi said the company would also require a permit from the DEM to apply insecticides and that residents should question peddlers for identification and verification of permits.

POSTING ON AUG. 8: “At long last the therapy pool is fixed and will be open regular hours starting tomorrow (Wednesday).”.
