Public to view, comment on plans for 2 new schools

Warwick residents will get the chance to examine the latest plans for the new Pilgrim and Toll Gate high schools next month. The Warwick School Committee and LeftField Project Management, the owner-project-manager (OPM) for the construction of both high schools, have agreed to hold a special meeting on Aug. 21 at Warwick Veterans Memorial Middle School at 6 p.m. for the public feedback on the schematic designs. The plans will be up online later this month or in early August.

School Committee Chair Shaun Galligan said that the committee wanted to make sure that the meeting was held before the beginning of the school year.

“The beginning of the school year is very chaotic- you have open houses, school kickoff events, especially at the administration level, fall sports,” Galligan said. “So the administration, as well as the School Committee, we try to get to as many of those events as possible with the school year kicking off, and we didn’t want to try to contend with that.”

The meeting, Galligan said, will be structured as though it was a regular meeting. At the meeting, LeftField and Dimeo, the construction manager for both high schools, will be giving a presentation where they show their current schematic designs for both schools.

Following the presentation, the School Committee will have a chance to give their comments on the schematic designs. After that, a public comment session will open, and attendees will have three minutes to give their thoughts on the plans for the high schools.

“Nothing is going to actually be concrete until essentially it’s concrete, right?” Galligan said. “That’s what I’m hoping to accomplish here, because there’s a lot of rumors or speculation within the community, and I think that’s natural when enough information hasn’t been provided to them. So with the information we can provide to them and bring them along in the process, the less anxiety, speculation or rumors there would be.”

In the School Committee’s most recent meeting, held last Tuesday, Senior Project Manager Chris Spiegel said that LeftField still had yet to finish the schematic designs of both buildings, though he said that it would be completed over the next couple of weeks.

“We are still very early in this process,” Spiegel said.

Prior to the special meeting, LeftField is planning to create a website to show off the plans for both high schools. That website, Spiegel said, will likely be made public in late July or early August.

This week also saw the beginnings of physical work for both high schools, with enabling and pre-construction work to prepare the sites of the new Pilgrim and Toll Gate for construction beginning on Tuesday.

Galligan said that there will be another special meeting in October, and he’s hoping to have bimonthly meetings showing up-to-date designs until the official start of construction next March.

“This is one of the largest things to happen within our community in a long time, and quite possibly the largest school construction project in state history,” Galligan said. “It’s important that we bring the community along.”
