Question & answers about Warwick’s new high schools

Posted

The following questions were submitted by readers about the new Toll Gate and Pilgrim High schools. Construction is slated to start on the $350 million project in March 2025 and the schools are scheduled to open for the 2027-28 academic year with demolition of the existing buildings and completion of athletic fields by August 2028. Steve Gothberg, school director of capital projects, answered the questions. Have a question about the schools? Please submit them to Adam Zangari at Adamz@rhodybeat.com and we will work to get answers.

  1. Are there going to be enough students to make these projects worth the cost?

Yes. Part of the processes that the Rhode Island Department of Education has organized for school building projects include the utilization of population projections through demographic studies. That said, we are working to ensure that the buildings are planned to accommodate any increase in population that could be seen from the various residential projects that are occurring or that are being planned throughout the city, as well as students that choose to return to Warwick Schools after the construction is complete.

  1. Why not build one large high school for all Warwick students instead?

This was explored in the visioning process, which occurred back in 2018 - 2019. It was here that groups comprised of community members, educators, etc. gathered to discuss the options for the new schools. It was determined there that a single location to accommodate approximately 2400 students for one large school would be very logistically difficult (i.e. traffic concerns, location, etc.).

  1. Are there concerns about possible supply shortages delaying construction?

No.  Supply chain is slowly improving and with the two year lead time we see no issues.

  1. How will construction affect homeowners nearby?

There has been much discussion and planning around minimizing the impact that construction could have on the neighboring homeowners. The construction company will utilize means to control dust, as well as work with the schools on any excessive noise issues. Additionally, there will be a number of community meetings and communications for our neighbors during this entire process.

  1. Will the funding be taken away if the projects are not completed on time?

The project will be completed on time.
