Securing a beach with grass

Posted

Save the Bay volunteers and personnel, armed with trowels and with their backs to the wind to avoid the blowing sand, planted hundreds of beach grass shoots on the recently restored beach front overlooking Brush Neck Cove at the end of Sea View Drive and Strand Avenue onTuesday and Wednesday. The beach restoration, with parking and handicapped accessible access, is part of a shoreline resilience project funded by the city, NOAA, CRMC, DEM and HUD through the community development grant program. Wenley Ferguson, Save the Bay director of restoration, said 6,700 beach grass plants will be planted to stabilize the beach. In addition, as truckloads of sand were delivered to the site, coconut fiber logs were anchored below the surface to stem erosion caused by storms. The finished project will include trails and shorten Sea View Drive. (Warwick Beacon photos)
