Passion for Lipstick Luncheon

On Feb. 12, the North Central Chamber of Commerce will hold their Lipstick Luncheon called "Passion" by the Women in Business Council from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Pocasset Bay, located at 12 Old Pocasset Lane in Johnston.
The North Central Chamber of Commerce Women in Business Council looks forward to an exciting new year kicking off their Lipstick Luncheons. Come listen to speakers talk about their passion for what they do, and how that passion drives their business.

Dunkin’ Scholarships

Dunkin’ Donuts and the franchisees of Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts have announced that applications for the 18th annual Dunkin’ Donuts Scholarship Program will be available Jan. 28 to Feb. 28. This annual program awards well-rounded students with scholarships for use toward their college education.
This year, Dunkin’ Donuts will award a $1,000 scholarship to one college-bound member of the senior class in each high school who excels academically, demonstrates leadership qualities and is involved with the community. More than 110 scholarships will be awarded throughout the area as part of the Dunkin’ Donuts Scholarship Program.
In the 18 years that local Dunkin’ Donuts franchisees have funded the program, nearly $2 million in scholarship money has been awarded to students.

Law school scholarship being offered

The Rhode Island Bar Foundation, the charitable arm of the non-profit Rhode Island Bar Association, is seeking applications for its Thomas F. Black Jr. Memorial Scholarship. The Bar Foundation intends to award two scholarships of $20,000 each to Rhode Island residents who enroll as first-year students in an American Bar Association accredited law school for the academic year beginning September of 2013.
The scholarship is for the first year of law school only and is non-renewable. Each scholarship award is made on the basis of demonstrated financial need, superior academic performance, community and public service, and demonstrated contacts with and commitment to the state of Rhode Island.
Since 1984, this fund has awarded 50 scholarships to promising law students from Rhode Island. The scholarship program receives substantial funding from the Horace A. Kimball and S. Ella Kimball Foundation, and the Champlin Foundations in honor of the late Thomas F. Black Jr. The Rhode Island Bar Foundation Scholarship application deadline is March 18. Eco-Depot coming soon

Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation (RIRRC) has announced their Eco-Depot household hazardous waste (HHW) collection schedule for the 2013 calendar year. The collections, which help to keep household hazardous waste out of the state’s Central Landfill and out of Rhode Island’s waterways, are provided to Rhode Island residents free of charge. The next collection will be held at the Central Landfill Complex at 65 Shun Pike in Johnston from 8 a.m. to noon on Feb. 2.
Household hazardous waste must be collected separately in order to protect humans, animals and the local environment. These are products that have warning labels indicating they are dangerous to human health because they are flammable, caustic, combustible or toxic. Common HHW items include fluorescent light bulbs, oil-based paint, mercury thermometers, used motor oil, gasoline, antifreeze, pool and lawn chemicals, propane tanks and pesticides.
For those who wish to attend the Eco-Depot event, an appointment must be made with Eco-Depot in advance. By making an appointment for the Eco-Depot drop-off, customer wait times are kept to a minimum. Sacred Heart University in Connecticut has announced the dean's list for the fall semester. To receive this honor, a student must achieve a 3.6 grade point average. Congratulations to Amy Buonaccorsi and Bianca Tiberi, both of Johnston, for making the list.
Kyle J. Bert of Johnston has been named to the dean's list at Western New England for the fall semester. Bert is a sophomore majoring in pre-pharmacy.
