WFFSC wraps up busy summer

The Warwick FireFighters Soccer Club recently unveiled the recipients of the annual scholarships handed out alongside the Elanna Zuller Memorial Sports Fund and the Gianna Cirella Memorial Fund.

These $300 scholarships are handed out each year to local soccer players that have made an impact both on and off the field while exhibiting academic excellence. These players have also grown up in the WFFSC and continue to make their presence felt.

This year’s recipients are: Katie Shaheen (East Carolina University); Callie Fagundes (University of Rhode Island); Kara Yelman (University of North Florida); Morgan Caianiello (Wentworth Institute of Technology).

“These players embodied everything that WFFSC desires in individuals. In addition to their high skill that they developed with many years of hard work they also are great teammates and show great sportsmanship. All of these players started at a young age with WFFSC and all of them have tremendous futures ahead of them. I wish them all the best,” said WFFSC president Doyle Byrd.

It was another busy summer for WFFSC as it also announced its Superliga Sportsmanship Awards, which are handed out to coaches that received positive feedback from referees from the previous season.

This year’s recipients were coaches Christy Belisle (Boys 13-U); Kurt Keaney (Girls 16-U); Craig Hochman (Girls 10-U); Bob Enright (Girls 9-U) and Doyle Byrd (Boys 11-U).

The club was once again well represented at the annual New England Revolution 4 v 4 tournament at Gillette Stadium. The girls U-10 team had a big outing and finished first place in front of a packed crowd.

The team was coached by Craig Hochman and the players included Lily Ciano, Addison Ciano, Iseye Drechsler, Celine Hibbert, Sasha Hochman, Penelope Morse, Zoe Pigeon and Kenzie Rattigan.

Another team that enjoyed a big season was the U-12 Anchor Girls club that won the state Superliga Spring Championship over Coventry.

WFFSC won the championship match 4-2 and was led by Bella Pfeiler who scored a pair of goals in the victory. Sophia Politelli scored a goal while Mary Monahan added another on a corner kick from Hannah Hochman.

Addison Dempsey got the win in net for WFFSC.

“This team should be proud of the great season they had and taking home that final win,” said Byrd.

The state champion U-12 Anchor Girls were coached by Bill Johnston.
