The Social House roosts in downtown Apponaug

It took about an hour and a half after it first opened to the public on Saturday afternoon for The Social House in Apponaug to become a full house.

That, according to co-owners and co-founders of PJ’s Hospitality Group Paul Voigt and John Krikorian, was exactly what they hoped for.

“It was great,” Voigt said. “We worked through the kinks- getting the cocktails right, the proportions right, the food- everything. And we appreciate everybody coming out and being patient with us.”

The Social House, a cocktail bar located at 3295 Post Road, is open from Tuesdays through Sundays from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m., giving Apponaug a new upscale, modern nightlife option.

The business is Voigt and Krikorian’s third in the West Bay. The two got their start in 2008, opening PJ’s Pub in Cranston, and would later open The Gentleman Cigar Lounge in the city as well.

Voigt and Krikorian chose Apponaug for their business in large part because of their vision of the village’s future, as well as its proximity to their other two businesses.

“We really liked the vision of what Apponaug is becoming, and we wanted to be part of it” Voigt said. “We wanted to bring what we wanted to bring, not just another restaurant.”

Most of the building’s decorations were done by Voigt’s wife, Crystal Riley Voigt, who Paul credited with bringing his and Krikorian’s vision of The Social House to life.

The aesthetic of the business, according to project assistant Heather Santoro, is heavily bird and birdcage-themed. Walls are decorated with jungle-themed artwork prominently featuring toucans, peacocks and other tropical birds, and most of the lights in the building are covered in birdcages. At the back of the business is a neon sign saying “Welcome to the Jungle.”

“This building is almost 100 years old- we had to do a complete renovation,” Santoro said. “We really wanted to make it pop, clean it and bring it to life.”

The bird theme continues into the menu as well, with the house’s signature drink- the Jungle Bird, consisting of bumbu rum, Campari, lime, pineapple and brown sugar with an additional pineapple wedge- being served in a birdcage. Other drinks, according to Voigt, are named after the different birds and bugs that can be found decorating The Social House’s walls.

Steven Servant and Anne Skelly, who hold the distinction of being the first customers to walk through The Social House’s doors, said that they had first heard about The Social House through a friend in the area.

After an hour at the bar, they had rave reviews.

“It looked very pricey, but the beers are very reasonable for this area, comparing prices,” Servant said. “And the food is incredible.”

Voigt and Krikorian hope to see the business establish itself as a new staple for the Apponaug community for a long time to come. Voigt is hoping to see the business become a go-to host for private events, which can be set up through the business’s website, www.socialhouseri.com.

The opening weekend, Voigt said, was a great start.

“We’re excited for the future,” Voigt said. “It’s really everything we wanted it to be.”
