Gaspee Days season is in full swing in Pawtuxet, with Memorial Day weekend kicking off the festivities with a block party and arts and crafts festival on the Warwick side of the village.
With the 59th annual parade and other annual favorites coming up, the next major celebration is this Saturday, June 1. That date will see two different events, with the first- a performance by the Warwick Symphony Orchestra in Pawtuxet Park- kicking off at 5 p.m.
That will be followed with fireworks at 9 p.m. at Salter’s Grove. Those wishing to view the skies from Pawtuxet Park will get a good view of the show as well.
Over the border in Cranston, June 4 will see an ecumenical service at Trinity Episcopal Church. Held at 6 p.m., the service will be non-denominational, and include refreshments and music.
All of these events lead into the weekend of June 8, when the main events commence bright and early. At 9:30 a.m. at the Scottish Rite Lodge, more than 1,600 runners will kick off in the weekend with the Gaspee Days 5K Foot Race, which will go along the parade route marked by the red, white and blue stripe running down the center of the road.
Just half an hour after those runners step off, the Gaspee Days Parade will begin. Arguably the main event, this year’s grand marshal is Dean Scanlon, owner of Pawtuxet’s Revolution Bistro.
The festivities don’t end after the parade, though, as four separate events will continue through June 9th. One- the Colonial Encampment- will be available all weekend at Pawtuxet Park, teaching those who go about colonial life.
At 11 a.m. on Sunday, the Blessing of the Fleet will occur. Anyone who wants their ships blessed will be able to do so at 11 a.m. at the Rhode Island Yacht Club, on the Cranston side of Pawtuxet.
The week’s final two events will both take place in Pawtuxet Park, with Sunday in the Park- featuring live music and food- starting at noon.
Concluding the weekend and the Gaspee Days festivities will be the ceremonial Burning of the Gaspee in Pawtuxet Cove, starting at 4 p.m.
