A teller at Wave Credit Union on Warwick Avenue just said “No” to a 25-year-old homeless man who demanded money from the teller on Tuesday. Police searched the neighborhood after the man fled on foot to the area near Pilgrim High School, later apprehending him.
Police said Justin Evans, 25, of Warwick, entered Wave Credit Union at about 10:15 a.m. and wrote a note demanding money but, with no weapon and an apparently un-intimidating presence, the teller said “No.”
Employees gave police a good description of Evans and they eventually caught up with him at the Walmart store on Post Road.
Earlier reports that there was a lockdown at Pilgrim High School during the search were apparently conflated by a report that the suspect attempted to enter the high school to hide out but was challenged and turned aside as he attempted to get in.
“Yes,” said Det. Capt. Christopher Stewart, “we heard about that, but there was no lockdown. They just didn’t let him in.”
The teller additionally told police that Evans said he was homeless and police located Evans at the Walmart store around 2 p.m. based on the detailed description they got from the credit union employees. Evans was taken to Warwick Police Headquarters, where he confessed to attempting to rob the credit union. He is being charged with attempted felony larceny and was arraigned yesterday at Kent County Courthouse.
Evans was not a stranger to Warwick Police, having been arrested and convicted a number of times on felony possession of stolen goods, possession of drugs, computer fraud and larceny.

Mr. Kernan, I'm so upset about your article ..
I know for a fact that Pilgrim was on lock down, my grand daughter attends Pilgrim. Her mother got a phone notification at 1:30, tuesday afternoon that Pilgrim and Holliman were on lockdown due an incident at Wave Credit Union on Warwick Ave. and the Warwick Police said the lockdown was lifted.
Also the Homeless man entered Pilgrim and was in the main hall..
Sounds like you were misinformed.

Wow! Reporting that there was no lock down, when if fact there was?! IF this guy was in the building, IF this guy was dangeous, had a weapon --many lives would of been lost today! If this guy did enter Pilgrim High--how, when & where!! There are new security measures in place so that this would not happen!! OUTRAGEOUS! !!
