Powerful & profane “The Motherf**ker With The Hat” at Burbage

Posted

Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis was the hottest writer on Broadway when his latest play, whose complete title couldn’t be printed in family newspapers, hit the stage.

In the original, Bobby Cannevale and Chris Rock played Jackie and Ralph, the two leading characters now portrayed by Victor Machado and Anthony Goes at the Pawtucket theatre.

The 95-minute production runs  without intermission, and it runs fast and furious.

We first meet Jackie at his girlfriend Veronica’s (Catia) apartment.  He has brought her flowers and candy to celebrate his release from prison, getting a job and finding a sponsor for his AA journey.

All seems promising for the couple until he finds a hat on the table.

Who has been with Veronica?

Jackie turns to his sponsor, Ralph (Anthony Goes) for advice and counsel, also enlisting support from his cousin Julio (Arturo Puentes).

He looks for sympathy from Ralph’s wife Victoria, (Marleny Luna) with an unexpected response.

The situation becomes out of control as friendships, loyalty and fidelity are put to the test, raising all sorts of issues.

While lifestyles and beliefs are challenged, we are left to our own conclusions about what will happen to these people, and how far morality can stretch among people who are close to each other but completely wrapped up in themselves.

The play is saturated with profanity, which may be a turnoff for some. Personally, I find it difficult to accept that there are people who converse as if the f-word is the only noun, verb, adjective and adverbs in their repertoire.

The acting is very good, so good that while you won’t want these people as friends, you will feel for them.

At Burbage Theatre, 59 Blackstone Ave. in Pawtucket, through June 16. Call 484-0355 or visit burbagetheatre.org for tickets.
